Can dental work really make us sick?

If you're here reading this, then.. well, you've been on a (possibly very long) journey to reclaim your energy, calm inflammation, or finally get to the root of mysterious symptoms that labs can't explain, so you already know that true wellness goes deeper than diet and exercise.

What many people are surprised to learn is that dental work—often overlooked in conventional healthcare—can be a hidden source or amplifier of chronic stress and disease in the body.

Between root canals and implants harbouring toxic bacteria and inflammatory by-products that silently shred immunity and cardiovascular and metabolic health, silver amalgam fillings that continuously release mercury for a smorgasboard of neurological and cognitive concerns, and oral parasites that can trigger allergies and suppress immune function, its possible that toxic dental work might be a missing piece in your search for better health.

The good news? Once you understand the connection between oral health and your overall vitality, you have the power to make informed choices to support your body's ability to heal and thrive.

As your Dental Detox Coach I'm going to be straight with you on some things. Lets start at the beginning because I really understand how scary getting dental work can be; even general dental work can be confusing,  disempowering and trauma-triggering for many people. Let alone thinking of going in for more!

After 30 years at dental chair-sides holding patients' hands, I have seen how this can play out. You might be totally fine! But you may also delay the inevitable (leading to bigger problems), information from the dentist is scarce or confusing and you don't know enough to ask questions (or self-advocate if you need to), you feel anxiety rising but don't want to be 'difficult' and then when you finally get to the chair you're put waaay way down onto your back to trust a stranger with sharp objects and unknown procedures in your vulnerable mouth and teeth. Unless you had a good start you may  find the dentist a scary place.

So I realise that going back in for more of this is an ask of yourself that you won't make lightly. As a dental detox coach and patient advocate I keep this understanding front and centre. And. I also realise you really want to remove road-blocks to healing, that you really need to get the pros and cons of dental toxicity in a digestible way, and you REALLY need to find the personal certainty to underpin any decisions you'll need to make.

Because dental revision is a nuanced, invested and sometimes challenging process that can and should be a considered, thoughtful, thorough and most of all respectful process for all parties involved.

Keeping all that in mind, let me guide you through some answers to questions you might have about what on earth a Dental Detox entails :

what exactly are 'dental toxins'?

Dental toxins are a complex (and controversial) suite of man-made issues in the mouth that can be distilled to a couple of items for simplicity sake.

  • Amalgam fillings which are all made of 50% mercury (REF
  • root canal fillings in dead teeth which are all unsterilisable and become bacteria hotels (REF)
  • implants which are an inviting option but can have deadly consequences (REF)
  • Additionally oral parasites are an emerging facet of dental health that can have far reaching effects on the body (REF)

All of these toxic elements require specific removal techniques and a dentist willing to do the work. None of this work is outside of the scope of general dentistry, but the rationale is definately outside of general dental comfort zone. This is why approaching a general dentist directly to ask questions or get work done can be a frustrating and fruitless excersise.

..and what is dental detoxification?

Dental detoxification is the systematic and careful removal of dental toxins from your mouth. Gold standard removal techniques inlcude the IOMAT techniques and the Huggins Allined Healing techniques.

Most of this is done in the dental chair but an essential peice of the dental detoxification protocol is run by a primary health care ally ie: a doctor or naturopath or nutritionist knowledgable about the specific requirements of dental toxicity.

Dental toxins are some of the most insidious and toxic and need to be carefully removed - often sequentially - in order for best results to be gained. This is where a Dental Detox Coach in your team can be invaluable.

do I really need another damn thing on the get-healthy list?

I SO get this question... eat better, take a gazillion supplements, excersie, sweat, freeze, sleep, fast.. the list in pursuit of wellness can be punishing! But, at the base of every strong building is a foundation that will withstand the buffeting.

If you have toxic dental work, then your foundation is eroding and leaking toxins,  so building a robust wellness routine on top of that isn't sustainable in the longer term. Removing causatory toxins and inflammation is the best way to make any wellenss or recovery routine more effective.

How does this Dental Detox work?

Here at the Lounge, dental detoxing unfolds in three steps designed to put you back in the driver's seat of your health. Eash step is buildable on the last and almost all steps and substeps are optional depending on your requirements and level of education.

Step one: Find your Why. Knowing how dental work contributes to health problems gives you the clarity and commitment to see the process through.

Step two: Get Support. Partner with a naturopath, functional medicine doctor, or clinical nutritionist who understands dental toxicity and can serve as your primary health support. And because its confusing as hell to engage with a dentist for this stuff you'll want a qualified biological dental facilitator to guide you through the practicalities and support you before, during and after you sit in the dental chair.

Step three: Do the thing With your team in your corner, together we move through your plan and procedures at a pace that honors your system, to gently usher out released toxins and clear a path to better healing.

Who am I? And Could we be a Good Fit?

Jaye Allan - BHSc (Nutritional Medicine)
Grad Dip (Public Health)

So, who am I, and why would you want me walking beside you through this? I'm Jaye, a nutritionist and health researcher with three decades of experience at the chair-side—working alongside both conventional and biological dentists, holding thousands of hands through procedures exactly like the ones you're considering.
That blend of clinical dental knowledge and whole-body wellness training means I speak both languages; the mechanics of what happens in that dental chair and also how it lands in your body, your nervous system, and your healing journey.
I bring the expertise, the compassion, and witness of past results from clients that have healed when they cleared the path with care. I'm here to help you figure out if your personal path should include dental revision, and to walk that out with you - at your pace.

You'd want me in your corner if... you're done feeling confused, rushed, or small in medico/dental settings
.. you want someone who can translate dentist-speak into plain English, and who knows which questions actually matter.
.. you need a steady, knowledgeable ally to help you weigh the pros and cons so you can make decisions from certainty and not fear.

We'd be a great fit if... you're ready to make decisions about your dental and whole-body health and want clarity around how that will look for your personal situation
..you're seeking a thoughtful, respectful process over a rushed fix
.. you're ready to remove the roadblocks to healing and want a guide who understands that "getting the work done" and "feeling safe" aren't mutually exclusive.

MY LIMITATIONS & SCOPE:  I DO NOT: Provide dental or medical diagnosis or treatment • Replace the dentist-patient or primary practitioner-patient relationship • Guarantee specific outcomes • Override clinical decisions made by licensed practitioners • Provide legal or insurance advice. I DO: Facilitate communication and coordination • Educate and advocate • Support informed decision-making • Ensure protocols are followed, document and report

The DDL DENTAL DETOX PROTOCOL:

Step 1: Find your why

Dental Revision can be a challenge its true.. when you start by learning what's actually in your mouth - mercury fillings, root canals, implants, or hidden infections - and you can see how these could be influencing your health;  when you know why you're doing this, you'll have the clarity and conviction to see the process through.

STEP 1 includes:

  • Comprehensive intake and consultation
  • Your personal dental map plus suggested treatment plan.
  • Your personally tailored info dossier.

This step will save you the labour pain and just give you the baby; peer-reviewed, battle-tested information (only what you need to know but nothing less) to get you clear on why and what you are willing to do or not do to clear toxins, and a personal map and treatment plan tailored to your individual dental picture that you can take to any dentist for action.

Step 2: Get support

This means partnering with your team: a naturopath, functional medicine doctor, or nutritionist who gets dental toxicity, a dentist willing to do the work and for best results, a dental detox co-ordinator (thats me!) to bring it all together and advocate for you as you get your work done.

Step 2 includes:

  • Client's dentist liaison and planning.
  • Client's Practitioner liaison and planning.
  • Client Pre/post procedure consult and clearance report.

This step gives you the support and confidence you'll need to get your work done and your body supported through the process, and my job  as your Detox co-ordinator is to ensure you are getting the job done you think you are, with the respect you need and the level of competency  you require. You'll emerge from step 2 with a plan and practitioners ready to support you.

Step 3: do the thing

With your decision locked in, a treatment plan in hand and your support team in place its time to work with a a willing dentist to clear that toxic dental work once and for all. Complete work at a pace that feels right for you, follow your detox plan and create that clean foundation to re-build better health.

Step 3 includes:

  • Dental Co-ordinator Treatment guidance
  • Dental kit supply to treating dentist
  • OPTIONAL - chairside assistance/support

This step is the completion of careful planning, step-by-step negotiation and agreements along the way. It should be clear and straightforward for all parties, with no major surprises and a final dental map that shows complete removal of your dental toxins. You may also opt for Jaye's chairside assistance for an added layer of treatment certainty (currently available by agreement in Australia and NZ only)
